In the modern age, football in its medieval and Renaissance form had been banned because of the brutality of its rules which often led to serious injuries and damage to homes and premises near the pitch. Despite this, in English schools, the passion for this sport remained alive and the only way to make it less violent was to codify a rule that defined its boundaries and clearly established the ways of playing.
